  1. STalker 3 Demonstration Version
  2. -------------------------------
  3.  
  4. At last it's here! The demo version of the "must have" program of the year.
  5.  
  6.  
  7. First off, please note that the following features are disabled:
  8.  
  9. o Saving/Loading configurations, function keys, and dialer entries.
  10. o Uploading is disabled and downloading does not save the file permanently.
  11. o Remote (mini-BBS) mode is disabled.
  12. o The About STalker box will appear every once in a while.
  13.  
  14.  
  15. To get going, here is all you have to do:
  16.  
  17. o Make sure you have STKRDEMO.PRG and STALKER.RSC in the same folder.
  18.  
  19. o If you use a high speed modem (more than 2400 baud), run AUXINIT.PRG first.
  20.   This will increase the buffer size of the RS-232 port.
  21.  
  22. o Run STKRDEMO.PRG.
  23.  
  24. o Now, you will need to configure STalker to match your modem's settings. To
  25.   begin with, if you use a port other than the ST-compatible RS-232 port,
  26.   press Shift-Alt-P to select the correct port. Most likely, you will not have
  27.   to change this option.
  28.  
  29. o The Modem Settings dialog (Alt-M) is next. If you are using a
  30.   Hayes-compatible modem, you can probably leave the Dialer Prefix as "ATDT",
  31.   unless your phone line does not support touch tone dialing, in which case
  32.   you should change this to "ATDP". Also, if your modem does not support DCD
  33.   or DTR (or you are not certain if it does) press the black squares next to
  34.   each of these options one time, so that the squares are white inside (not
  35.   selected.)

  37. o In order to test out STalker fully, you probably want to try dialing a
  38.   BBS or other service. Call-up the Autodialer Directory by pressing Alt-A.
  39.   Here, you can specify the names, phone numbers, and Dial menu entries
  40.   (where it says "Menu#") of up to 30 phone numbers at once. Probably the
  41.   best thing to do is to just enter one number, though, because you cannot
  42.   save configurations in this demo version.

  44. o After you have entered a number in the Auodialer, look to the right of the
  45.   dialog. There you will see a row of buttons with the letters C, T, X, L, and
  46.   S. Each of these buttons will let you set a particular set of parameters
  47.   that are specific to the corresponding autodialer entry to the left. The
  48.   first two options may require some changes:
  49.  
  50.   C. Communication Settings. Select your modem speed, and the other
  51.      attributes the service you are going to connect to expects. The most
  52.      common configuration is 7 data bits, 0 parity, 1 stop bit. For GEnie,
  53.      you should use this configuration and set the Mode to Echo.
  54.   T. Terminal Settings. Here you can set the terminal emulation and display
  55.      font size.  If you have GDOS loaded with monospaced fonts, then you can
  56.      select a font other than the system font. If the font you are using
  57.      supports multiple point sizes, then you can also enter them here. The
  58.      system font supports point sizes 8, 9, and 10. This option is especially
  59.      useful with PC-ANSI bulletin boards, since STalker includes a real PC
  60.      font.

  62. o To log-into the service, select the square to the left of the dialer entry
  63.   you just created; it will turn grey to indicate a "Dial & de-select". Now,
  64.   press the Dial button and the phone number should be dialed and a
  65.   connection established.
  66.  
  67. o Use the service as you normally would. File uploading is disabled in this
  68.   demo version, but downloading works normally, except that the file is not
  69.   written permanently to disk. To initiate an X/YModem download, tell the
  70.   host system to begin downloading, and then press Alt-D (Download binary
  71.   file). An item selector will appear so that you can tell STalker where to
  72.   "store" the file. If you are performing a ZModem download and the
  73.   "Auto-initiate ZModem transfers" option has been set then you do not even
  74.   need to use Alt-D; STalker will begin downloading the file automatically.

  76. Some other things you may want to try:
  77.  
  78. o Click with the left mouse button within the STalker window. Hold the mouse
  79.   button and move the mouse. You will notice that an area of text is now
  80.   selected. When you release the mouse button, a menu will appear to ask you
  81.   what to do with the selected text.
  82.  
  83. o Included with this demo version is a sample BackTALK script. This powerful
  84.   language lets you write scripts to automate things you do frequently so,
  85.   for instance, you could log onto GEnie, read your new mail and save it to a
  86.   disk file, and then log off automatically.

  88.   The sample script can be invoked by the "Run BackTALK script" option
  89.   (Alt-Enter). An item selector will appear, with which you should select the
  90.   file DEMO.BTK. Follow the prompts which appear.

  92.   If you want to see what the demo script looks like, you can show the file
  93.   DEMO.BTS or load it into your text editor.

  101. o  File up/downloading works in the background, while you run other GEM
  102.    programs
  103. o  Works as both a desk accessory and a program
  104. o  A fully-programmable Remote Mini-BBS Mode that is actually a BackTALK
  105.    script!
  106. o  Function keys, function keys, function keys...did I mention function keys?
  107. o  Automatic login and execution of BackTALK scripts
  108. o  Interfaces with STeno to provide an editable capture buffer and
  109.    conferencing type-ahead buffer.
  110. o  It is compatible with all ST, STe, and TT models and works with any
  111.    screen size which is 640x200 or larger. Works great with the Moniterm and
  112.    ISAAC boards!
  113. o  Includes the BackTALK script compiler and lots of sample BackTALK scripts
  114. o  Comes with a complete, 200-page manual
  115. o  Supplied on a double-sided disk
  116.
